Sounio and the Archaeological Site of Cape Sounion

Sounio is one of the most beloved places on the Athenian peninsula for the inhabitants of Attica.

It is home of Poseidon ancient Temple with a spectacular view of the Aegean sea.

And there on a hilltop, about 40 miles from Athens, lies the ancient Doric Temple of Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea in classical mythology.

The ruins situated in the archaeological site bespeak an elegant and proud temple, considered the second most important ancient Temple in the area of Attica.

Constructed from white marble, back to 440 BC, above the sea at a height of almost 60 meters, it really offers a magnificent view and as most people admit, a visitor can enjoy here one of the most splendid sunsets in the world.

The remains are perched on the headland, surrounded on three sides by the sea. The ruins bear the deeply engraved name of English Romantic poet Lord Byron (1788–1823).

The site is a popular day-excursion for tourists from Athens, with the sunset over the Aegean Sea, as viewed from the ruins, a sought-after spectacle.
